Vincent Price is zoals steeds hypnotiserend demonisch als Roderick Usher, een man die per vergissing zijn zuster levend heeft begraven en nu het slachtoffer wordt van haar spookachtige wraak. Corman groeide met deze cyclus uit tot de man die het best Poe in filmbeelden wist te vertalen. Ondanks budgettaire beperkingen regisseert hij met een grote flair voor het gotische genre en worden zijn films gekenmerkt door delirante visuele verbeelding. Er is vooral ook een schitterende aanwending van het decor, zoals hier het vervloekte huis dat bespied lijkt door de boosaardige ancestrale schilderijen die aan de kreunende muren hangen. (P.
