Sinds zijn baanbrekende eerste films hield Resnais niet op te experimenteren met de verhalende structuur. Ook “Smoking/No Smoking” is een vernuftig narratief experiment, dit keer gebaseerd op toneelstukken van de Britse dramaturg Alan Ayckbourne. De negen upper middle class personages (onder wie een drankzuchtig schoolhoofd, zijn onberispelijke vrouw, zijn collega en diens nymfomane vrouw, de tuinman, de meid) zijn inwoners van het Engelse dorp Hutton Buscel en worden allemaal gespeeld door de twee lievelingsacteurs van de regisseur : Sabine Azéma en een meestal onherkenbare Pierre Arditi.
