The Alain Resnais films “Smoking” and “No Smoking” are based on six out of eight original interconnecting plays written by Alan Ayckbourn. At the centre of “Smoking” is the unstable marriage between potentially alcoholic headmaster Toby Teasdale and his not too self-confident wife, Celia; Celia's hesitant flirtation with Lionel Hepplewick, a flashy jack of all trades; and the surprising transformation of the ostensible unassuming housekeeper Sylvie Bell. Lionel falls in love with Celia; he either gets her embroiled in a hopeless business project or follows her under a false name to a hotel by the sea. Celia either loses her nerve or does something unusual for her and seizes the initiative.
