De omnibusfilm The Year of the Everlasting Storm is geïnspireerd door Jafar Panahi's films in artistieke quarantaine. De Iraanse filmmaker stond al lang voor de lockdown onder huisarrest en ziet zijn vrijheid al bijna een decennium lang drastisch beknot. Hij is dus goed geplaatst om samen met zes andere veelgeprezen regisseurs in volle pandemie kortfilms te draaien. De regisseurs - Naast Panahi in Iran - zijn afkomstig uit de VS, Chili, China en Thailand (Anthony Chen, Malik Vitthal, Laura Poitras, David Lowery, Dominga Sotomayor en Apichatpong Weerasethakul). Ondanks de beperkingen waarin ze werden gedraaid, zijn hun segmenten indrukwekkend gevarieerd - gaande van documentaire tot speculatieve fictie en visuele poëzie. Thema’s als isolatie, familie en digitale verbinding vormen de rode draad in het eclectische geheel. Een verontrustende maar essentiële momentopname van het lockdownjaar.
