Newland Archer is verloofd met May Welland en hij spoort haar aan om zo vlug mogelijk de huwelijksdatum te kiezen. Hun huwelijk is typisch voor het klimaat van het oude New York met zijn tirannie van familieafstamming en sociale standing. Ellen Olenska, May’s nicht, is net uit Europa teruggekeerd. Newland voelt zich, onmiddellijk na hun eerste ontmoeting tot haar aangetrokken.
