30e Internationaal Filmfestival van Vlaanderen-Gent 2003

The 30th Gent Film Festival, an anniversary edition, will take place from 7 to 13 October. Erik van Looy's "De Zaak Alzheimer" opens the festival, while "Finding Nemo" closes it.

Guest of honour this year is Jeanne Moreau, who is head of the jury. She receives an homage programme as well as a Joseph Plateau Award. During the World Soundtrack Awards she also gives Maurice Jarre his Lifetime Achievement.

With the Specials section the festival proves its idiosyncratic nature. The programme consists of ‘Mental Hygiene’ - a series of American educative films - the horror movie Freddy vs. Jason and a retrospective of exceptional Swedish videoclips and commercials, to name a few.

The ‘A look apart’ section, part of the world cinema programme, is divided into multiple themes this year. In cooperation with magazine Filmmaker there is attention for a new generation of American independent filmmakers. Other sections include ‘Facts and thoughts’, where social, political and historical documentaries are shown, or ‘Camera Lucida’ where films are presented that ride the line between film and visual arts, co-presented by SMAK. There is also an LGBT section and a programme focussed on remarkable debuts.

During the World Soundtracks Awards, a film concert is given by Patrick Doyle assisted by Klaus Badelt and Hooverphonic. The day after a film music seminar is organised, led by Stephen Warbeck. The icing on the cake is the anniversary book "Moving Music", where a large number of composers give their say about the festival.
