Op een zomerdag ligt Alice in het gras te dagdromen. Plots ziet ze een wit konijn met een groot horloge voorbij rennen. Ze gaat het dier achterna, maar valt pardoes in een konijnenhol. In een mysterieus klein kamertje neemt ze een slokje van een flesje op tafel. Het toverdrankje maakt haar zo klein dat ze zelfs door het sleutelgat kan kruipen. Afhankelijk van wat ze eet wordt Alice heel groot of heel klein. Ze komt terecht in een wonderbaarlijke droomwereld waar ze allerlei avonturen beleeft. Zo heeft ze een heel vreemd gesprek met een rups. Af en toe komt ze de Cheshire Kat tegen die steeds weer verdwijnt en verschijnt. Hij stuurt haar naar de paashaas en de gekke hoedenmaker, met wie Alice thee drinkt. Na de gekke theevisite wordt het Alice allemaal een beetje te veel. Ze wordt bang en weet niet meer welke kant ze op moet gaan. Dan verschijnt de kat weer en stelt haar een wedstrijdje croquet voor met de hartenkoningin. Maar wanneer de koningin haar hoofd wil, vlucht Alice, achternagezeten door een leger van speelkaarten …
