27e Internationaal Filmfestival van Vlaanderen-Gent 2000

This edition marks lots of retrospectives as well. The festival offers elaborate attention to Danish cinema. Lots of films by Lars von Trier are shown, who won the Palme d’Or for Dancer in the Dark the same year. Furthermore: adaptations from Edgar Allan Poe by cult director Roger Corman are shown and a program curated by animation filmmaker Raoul Servais. For that he doesn’t just select international classics, but also short films by upcoming Belgian talent. At the same time there is an exhibition dedicated to the master in the Caermersklooster, titled: ‘Raoul Servais, portrait of a painter-filmmaker’. Another exhibition organised by the festival is devoted to photographer Pat York: 'Pat York: Masked, Uncovered & Unmasked'.

For film music fans there is much to experience in this edition. Most notable is the concert given by Hans Zimmer as pre-opening of the festival in ‘t Kuipke, the very first time his film music is performed by a symphonic orchestra. He is supported by singer Lisa Gerrard and as icing on the cake Morgan Freeman is also present at the concert. Zimmer and Freeman both receive a Joseph Plateau Award that year, awarded during the Night of Cinema Musica.
