As far as I know, this is the first film that does not shrink from showing the actual inhabitants of the Warsaw ghetto. It shows that, beside the cruelties of the Nazis, there were individuals who had the nerve to swindle, cheat and exploit their fellow-sufferers. This moving film could be compared to a cantata, not only because of the masterly use of the music. (M. Delling)
