Yorgos Lanthimos goes sci-fi in Bugonia, a bonkers kidnapthriller riddled with political subtext. Nihilism, slapstick and absurdism go hand in hand when two conspiracy theorists kidnap a powerful pharmaceutical company CEO, convinced she’s an alien out to destroy Earth. Political activism has rarely been weirder, or more enjoyable, than in Lanthimos' universe.

Yorgos Lanthimos has become one of the most exhilarating filmmakers on the planet, which means each new film from the Greek director is once again a wild experience. Bugonia received a rapturous reception at the Venice Film Festival, and with good reason: there are countless reasons not to miss this satirical sci-fi remake of Jang Joon-hwan’s Save the Green Planet! Chief among them: Lanthimos in the director’s chair. The maverick filmmaker, who almost single-handedly launched the Greek Weird Wave, has carried his absurdist touch with him into Hollywood. After The Lobster (FFG2015) and the Oscar-winning The Favourite (FFG2018) and Poor Things (FFG2023), Bugonia is another subversive ode to farce and surrealism. The story follows two men who kidnap the CEO of a major corporation, convinced she is an alien about to destroy Earth. The “alien” in question? The phenomenal Emma Stone, teaming up with the celebrated Greek for the fourth time. This wild, darkly comic trip, set to a score by Jerskin Fendrix, promises to be both a cult classic in the making and a major awards contender.
