Who wins the most important European film prizes? On 9 December, the European Film Awards will be presented for the 36th time, and you can follow the culmination of the European film year live! The full award ceremony will be streamed live from Arena Berlin to the website of Film Fest Gent.

For its 50th anniversary edition, and in line with its musical DNA, Film Fest Gent releases a new format: FFG Sessions. Aiming to further promote film music as an art form, these concert sessions bring together experienced composers for screen and young musicians for an intimate live performance. For the first FFG Session, Japanese composer Eiko Ishibashi worked with students from KASK & Conservatory in Ghent.

The latest FFG Session features acclaimed American composer and violinist Daniel Hart, who is most famous for his ongoing creative partnership with director David Lowery. Together with students from KASK & Conservatory in Ghent and fellow composer Natalie Holt who joined the session, Hart performed music from A Ghost Story (2017) and The Green Knight (2021).

Film Fest Gent and Courtisane festival once again join forces and present the stage production As Filhas do Fogo (The Daughters of Fire). Created by filmmaker Pedro Costa and Portuguese music ensemble Os Músicos do Tejo, this symbiosis of music, song and image tells the story of the Cape Verdean people and their search for a better life. Music and film lovers will be able to experience Costa's first musical stage production during the Courtisane festival on 28 March 2024 in the Minard Theatre, Ghent.

Maar na afloop van de 74ste editie van de Berlinale werd de consensus over winnaar en palmares overschaduwd door tal van heftige politieke statements over het “eenzijdige pro-Palestijns discours” bij sommige prijswinnaars op de slotavond. “Onaanvaardbaar”, klinkt het en politici roepen de huidige en zelfs de toekomstige festivaldirectie op het matje. De politieke en culture hemel boven Berlijn blijft dus nog een tijdje bewolkt. En de doodsbedreigingen voor de bekroonde Israëlische regisseur Yuval Abraham bezorgen de Berlinale een nare coda.
