Resisting all types of easy categorisation, Syrian director Rand Abou Fakher’s full length feature debut Why Do I See You In Everything? is a disorienting hybrid documentary that contrasts violence with tenderness, and displacement with belonging. A poetic plaint that proves home truly is where the heart is, by focusing on the shared history of two lifelong friends.
A convoy of trucks winds its way through the desert, fully grown trees swaying precariously in their beds. The opening shot of Why Do I See You In Everything? seems almost randomly chosen, just one of the many snapshots that protagonists Nabil and Qusay managed to capture during their protests in Syria. Gradually, however, it becomes clear that the felled greenery serves as a metaphor for uprooting, land grabbing and violence. In this hybrid documentary, Syrian director Rand Abou Fakher closely follows the journey of two childhood friends. For decades, Nabil and Qusay make their way through political unrest, from Syria to Berlin, camera in hand. Archive footage and staged scenes alternate throughout this blend of documentary and fiction. The result is an associative collage with which Fakher fires off a sharp political statement at the viewer. Not just loud protest, but also friendship, intimacy and care are radical forms of resistance.
