Three women each choose solitude in their own way by retreating to the same mountain. Although they never meet, they sense each other’s presence as their different lives enter into a whispered dialogue. Belgium-based director Manon Coubia beautifully invigorates the current film landscape with this sublime debut fiction film in which one will want to dwell endlessly.
Anne, Hélène and Suzanne are staying on a mountain as "gardiennes de refuge", where they are responsible for maintaining a mountain hut and welcoming the walkers who stay there overnight. The women’s experiences are separated in time, but linked by the place and the small actions they carry out there. Every presence lingers in the thin air; every step taken is imprinted on the wooden floorboards. Shrouded in the silence of the night, the place speaks of the present and the past. Forêt Ivre is steeped in a love of analogue film and stories rooted in specific places that impose their own pace and customs. The work of seasoned short-film director Manon Coubia has been featured in our short-film competition right from the very beginning (2016, 2019, 2023). With her feature-length fiction debut, Coubia demonstrates that, even in this format, she promises to be one of the most remarkable names on the Belgian film scene.
