On a sweltering summer day, almost 13-year-old Bianca finds an unlikely confidante in her idol Billie King, a soap star who suddenly appears on her sofa. Frederike Migom, whose previous film Binti (2019) won the Ensor for Best Youth Film, turns Bart Moeyaert's beloved novel into a sun-drenched reverie on growing up, feeling invisible and the aching desire to be truly seen.
Bianca is a strong-willed girl of almost thirteen. She's not an easy child, according to her mother; “unmanageable”, according to her father and his new girlfriend, Cruz. Meanwhile, her little brother Alan, who needs constant care, hogs all the attention, making Bianca feel invisible. Until, one sweltering summer’s day, her great idol Billie King, a soap opera actress, suddenly turns up in the living room. Their unexpected conversations put into words feelings she cannot share with anyone else and teach her that she is, in fact, quite great. Following the award-winning Binti, which won the Ensor for Best Youth Film, Frederike Migom adapts Bart Moeyaerts’s much-loved book into a playful, moving film about the whimsical inner world of a teenager and the longing to be seen. With tenderness, humour and a dash of fantasy, she captures one chaotic day in the life of Bianca, a girl who, above all, wants to find her own place in the world.
