1850, the ship Charlotta sails from Sweden to New York. As usual, only poor emigrants are on board the ship. In search of a prospective future they have left their homestead. Among the group of emigrants this time, Karl Oskar Nilsson, his wife Kristina and many others from the province of Småland. The country life in the province was hard, the harvest was poor, the social prohibitions were rigid, many sold their belongings to join the great exodus to the United States. They were tempted by reports of unlimited opportunities, virtually free land and liberty of worship for all settlers. But the journey to the promised land is dangerous, the emigrants face death, loneliness, poverty and learn how to deal with idle dreams.
