A series of (potential) lovers meet each other only to part ways again, and vice versa. In Toute une nuite (1982) renowned Belgian filmmaker Chantal Akerman (Jeanne Dielman, 23 Quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles) explores the capricious nature of desire during a summer night that imposes its own rhythm onto the restless in Brussels. The film is now restored in 4K by CINEMATEK and Fondation Chantal Akerman.
For some, the night is full of possibility; for others, its darkness lingers long past dawn. In this nocturnal Brussels mosaic from 1982, Chantal Akerman presents a series of characters—played by, among others, Aurore Clément, Tchéky Karyo, and Jan Decleir—in brief vignettes. They wait, they pace, but above all they long for longing itself. Toute une nuit was Akerman’s first film financed without the requirement of a script in advance, granting her the freedom to write in a highly fragmentary way. Tirelessly, the acclaimed filmmaker captures, encounter by encounter, both passion and its inherent violence on screen. She sets aside words to let bodies speak, at times evoking the choreography of Pina Bausch. Lovers move faithfully to the rhythm of their shifting emotions. The film is shown here in its 4K restoration, undertaken by CINEMATEK and the Fondation Chantal Akerman.
