Bruno Tasslespeare is a shy, mild-mannered man who lives a quiet life and makes a modest living as an umbrella designer. Almost everyone takes advantage of his good nature, especially his despotic boss, domineering landlady and pushy neighbour. But then a phenomenal, impish little creature appears out of nowhere and "adopts" Tasslespeare, turning his "grin and bear it" existence upside down and inside out. The Slurb, as Bruno names it, - a Speckled Little Unidentified Red-headed Being - is as sassy and mischievous as its adopted "papa" is bashful and reticent. After several failed attempts to rid himself of the Slurb, Bruno eventually becomes very fond of his new little friend. To top it all off, he discovers that the freckle-like blue dots on the Slurb's cheeks can make wishes come true - any wish at all. But wishes can backfire …
