American documentarian Ross McElwee had been filming his family for decades when his son Adrian unexpectedly passed away in 2016. Dedicated and addressed to Adrian, Remake looks back on their complex relationship through footage shot by both of them, with McElwee questioning his closely intertwined role as a filmmaker and father. Heart-wrenching and deeply personal.

"The story I thought I was telling through my films, the stories of lives unfolding over decades, is now incoherent and confusing." American documentary maker Ross McElwee is celebrated for autobiographical work that closely involves his family, but after the death of his troubled son Adrian, he put down the camera for years. Remake is his attempt to pick up the thread again. McElwee confronts the many images at his disposal (unused archive footage, material from previous films, or footage shot by his son himself), all while wrestling with his dual role as filmmaker and father. Meanwhile, a Hollywood producer wants to adapt his influential Sherman's March (1986), for which McElwee was once accused: "This is not art, this is life!" With Remake, he tries to reconcile the two. The result is emotionally devastating and multifaceted. The film was awarded the Golden Globe Impact Prize for Documentary in Venice.
