Following a solitary gay man in Hong Kong who takes on the name and profession of his last hook-up, Queerpanorama is a bold, poetic, and sometimes unsettling exploration of queer identity that reveals the fragile and shifting boundaries between self-image and desire. The film is visually layered and meticulously crafted, with a hypnotic aesthetic that mirrors and amplifies the emotional complexity of being queer.
A hushed interior, Hong Kong's shadowy black alleys in stark black-and-white... This is where Queerpanorama, the daring third feature by Jun Li, takes shape. With striking visual finesse, he charts the erotic odyssey of a nameless young gay man who, in each encounter, adopts the identity of his previous lover. Scientist, architect, teacher, actor, courier... He slips into other people's lives only to inch closer to his own. Between raw sex, intimate conversations, and flashes of physical pain unfolds a kaleidoscope of desire, existential dread, and fleeting solace. Li blurs the line between truth and illusion. Queerpanorama was cast guerrilla-style, with many participants playing versions of themselves, including people Li first met through hookup apps. The film is visually breathtaking: long, static takes, a magical interplay of light and shadow, meticulously composed frames. Every scene is a work of arresting beauty.
