Plus que jamais (More Than Ever)

"There's nothing more annoying than being told how brave you are." It's just one of the poignant and honest observations in Emily Atef's sublime drama about a dying young woman - and about saying goodbye on your own terms. Hélène suffers from a lung disease that brings her closer to death with each second. Nevertheless, she insist on leading a life as normal as possible with her husband Mathieu, until she decides to free herself from the social codes and from the expectations of friends and family. Hélène leaves everything behind to go to Norway to spend the end of her life there. Atef's previous film - 3 Days in Quiberon, about a deteriorating Romy Schneider - was equally shrouded in vulnerability. Here she undoes death of its macabre context, as a way of invitation to stare death in the face; something that is even more confronting due to the heartbreaking role of the late Gaspard Ulliel who died in January after a skiing accident.
