Péter is confined in a detention centre, but gets leave to visit his sister Maria. When he arrives at the laundry where she works, he watches, hidden, a girl giving birth. Maria buys the child. Péter leaves, without revealing his presence. Two months later, he is released. While waiting for the passport he needs to travel, he works in a scrap metal yard and discovers that Maya, the young mother, is the mistress of his boss, János. He fancies her, but she fancies his ex-best friend Akos, who is the father of her child. But at the same time she plays around with Péter. János catches them in the act and throws her out on the street in a fit of jealousy. Maya desperately wants her child back and begs Péter to put in a good word for her so that she can get custody. Maria, wanting to get rid of her rival, suggests her brother that he should take Maya away with him, in exchange for the passport, which she had intercepted.
