This was the third of Powell and Pressburger's music-theatre extravaganzas, after "The Red Shoes" and "Tales of Hoffman." This film has long been considered the least succesful of the three. This reputation was - at least partly - sustained by the rarity of prints and hence screenings. Seeing the superb new Piper Heidsieck Classic Film Collection print immediately establishes that it was no less audacious than its distinguished predecessors. It was Pressburger who proposed updating Johann Strauss' vintage operetta, "Die Fledermaus," to the post-war Vienna, other than that the original text remains relatively intact.
