The best known stage play from August Strindberg is still “Fröken Julie”, the drama of a stormy relation between Jean and Julie, his boss’s daughter. Jean is an ambitious social climber, Julie a spoiled and temperamental girl. Strindberg plays with them like pawns in his copy of the “battle of the sexes”. The play, however written over 100 years ago, is still fascinating and attractive. For this new movie, Mike Figgis has cast Peter Mullan (“My Name is Joe”) and Saffron Burrows, not so well known over here. It is recommended to compare this movie with Alf Sjöberg’s version (see Focus on Sweden) that became a classic movie.
