The hamlet "Waterhoek" on the Scheldt is only connected by a ferry with the outside wor1d. The planning of a bridge causes a rebellion of the inhabitants. Lander attacks the geometer and his assistants in charge of the measurement. The geometer and one of his assistants get killed. Lander is caught by the police and taken away from the village whilst Mira, his niece and mistress, watches him, unmoved. In the tavern, she has made the acquaintance of Maurice Rondeau, engineer in charge of the construction of the bridge. Maurice, a shy, well educated young man, falls immediately in love with Mira. They marry and inaugurate the bridge...
