Ma nuit chez Maud stars Jean-Louis Trintignant as Jean-Louis, a devout catholic in love with Françoise (Marie-Christine Barrault), a pretty student he sees in church but is too shy to approach. When he runs into Vidal (Antoine Vitez), an old friend, Vidal invites him to dinner at the home of his bohemian lover, Maud (Françoise Fabian). There, they become involved in a lively philosophical conversation. In light of the bad snowstorm outside and the heavy drinking inside, Jean-Louis is persuaded to stay overnight at Maud's, but despite his hostess' advances does not make love to her. Later, he finally meets, and then marries, Françoise, only to find years later that she is the former mistress of Maud's husband.
