In the satirical found footage thriller Late Night with the Devil things go from bad to worse during a cursed talk show broadcast live on national TV in the 1970s. It's like having The Exorcist on Gert Late Night. Is there a demonologist in the audience?
Late Night with the Devil directed by Australian brothers Cameron and Colin Cairnes, proves that 'found footage' films can still offer originality. They unveil the so-called never-before-seen last footage of a doomed late-night talk show from 1977. In the cutthroat battle for ratings, host Jack Delroy (cult actor David Dastmalchian in a well-deserved leading role) goes all out with a Halloween special. Guests include a clairvoyant, a self-important hypnotist, the author of the parapsychological book Conversations with the Devil, and her potentially possessed study subject. The cleverly staged behind-the-scenes look sardonically winks at the collective trance of late-night TV and America's morbid fascination with the occult, sandwiched between commercials. The seventies atmosphere is spot-on down to the smallest details, and the special effects are devilishly good.
