A peasant woman is left a widow with ten children. Matters are made worse when her landlord decides to sell the land and she is forced to abandon their home in the country and move to the city of Bologna. Here she tries to open up a small shop to sell country wares but she cannot find a home for her family. Nobody wants ten children. Eventually she has to !ie to get an attic flat in the center of Bologna. But now her life becomes a nightmare... "I share Guareschi's love of the anarchistic traditions of the people of the Po valley", says Wertmüller.
