Ingmar Bergman

Höstsonaten (Autumn Sonata)

99' - 1978 - Drama - Dialogue: English, Swedish
Director: Ingmar Bergman With: Ingrid Bergman, Liv Ullmann, Lena Nyman
A world-renowned concert pianist returns to Sweden to visit the married daughter she has not seen for many years, and has to fare up to her feelings of guilt for having put her career above her family. As he did in “Persona”, Bergman places two women face to face with each other and their own inadequacies. With his masterly use of the close-up, and the flashback utilised as the subconscious, he creates a chamber work of almost Strindbergian intensity. Ingrid Bergman gives a remarkable performance, displaying every aspect of her screen personality over the years - naiveté, sophistication, gaiety, and tragedy. It was her first Swedish film for almost 40 years and her last feature before her death. (Foreign Film Guide)
