A finely made and very absorbing drama about a man suffering from Alzheimer's disease, Mind Shadows won't be everyone's idea of a night at the movies, but could find appreciative audiences. Maarten Klein is a Dutch-born businessman who lived with his wife Vera in the countryside outside Halifax. His wife is troubled because Maarten's mind is slowly going. He's forgetful, turns up at the office where he's retired since four years and takes the dog for a walk forgetting the dog. Though seemingly in good shape, Maarten talks
to himself and is haunted by disconnected memories of the past. Vera finds herself powerless to help. The bleak, snowbound canadian settings are a perfect background for this little drama. Femme director Honigmann handles the story with great delicacy and sensitivity and is aided by the intelligent and moving performance of Joop Admiraal. (Strat. in Variety. 24.2.1988)
