The film version of 'Gone With the Wind' was a unique product of one of filmmaking's most magical eras, the Golden Age of Hollywood. The great studios of the thirties and forties were little kingdoms ruled by men of vision whose decisions affected the careers of the many actors, directors, writers, designers and technicians under contract. Although the system had its abuses, it produced a body of screen entertainment unparallelled in film history. In 1939 alone, Hollywood released such classics as 'The Wizard of Oz', 'Dark Victory', 'Destry rides again', 'Gunga Din', 'Stagecoach', 'Ninotchka', 'Wuthering Heights' and 'Mr. Smith goes to Washington'. 'Gone With the Wind' will always be one of the finest products of that tradition. (pressbook)
