The film reveals the delirious union of a band’s inescapable allure and a decade’s misguided dreams. Weaving back and forth in time, the film travels between intoxicating performances from the Rolling Stones tours and portents of one of rock’s bitterest moments.
In addition to the scenes of Garden footage and in-the-studio-time, the film shows images of the band and their lawyers setting up a free concert in the San Francisco area. It is this concert that is the crux of the film. On December 6,1969, more than 300,000 people attended the show, which included performances from Santana, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young and the Jefferson Airplanes. The Hells Angels, who were the security force, resorted to violence: weighted pool cues kept enthusiastic and intoxicated fans at bay; eighteen-year-old Meredith Hunter was stabbed to death. Frightened devotees wondered en masse how the so-called Love Generation had become a generation of disillusionment and disappointment. (Synopsis Films Transit)
