Brooklyn, the 1940s. One night, Lawrence Newman, a middle-aged executive, witnesses a neighbour cavorting with a Hispanic woman. He later hears that the woman was raped and brutally assaulted. But he doesn’t tell anyone about it. Faced with anti-Semitism at work and in his neighbourhood, Lawrence resists joining the bigots, but he doesn't have the courage to stand up to them. One day, Gertrude Hart walks into his office looking for a job. But Lawrence, thinking she is Jewish, doesn’t want to employ her. She gets offended at his insinuations and storms out. Things get much worse for Lawrence when he gets a new pair of glasses, that make him look Jewish. His boss decides he doesn't make the right impression. Lawrence is outraged and quits. He runs into Gertrude again. The Jewish-owned firm she works for hires him. They fall in love and marry. His neighbours, believing Gertrude is a Jew, grow more and more suspicious and Lawrence soon finds himself in physical danger.
