Denmark in the darkest Middle Ages. The king and his son Valdemar’s favourite occupation is to spend their days wandering through the forests together. Valdemar is therefore not at all pleased to learn that he must travel to Bishop Eskil to get an education. The King is relieved to know that his son will be in good hands while he goes off to war. Valdemar struggles to learn his Latin texts and feels as if he were a prisoner in a dungeon. He finds it altogether more fun in the kitchen, where Signe and Aske work. Aske, the kitchen boy, soon becomes the prince's best friend. Aske knows that the prince wants nothing more than to be with his father again and he accompanies him on his dangerous journey across the moor.
