In 1932, the Japanese military has built a fortress for inhumane medical experiments. However, one man – Wang Ziyang – manages to escape the fortress alive. "Zhang Yimou's first spy thriller sends an ace team of Communist agents into the WW2 Japanese stronghold of Manchukuo. (...) The lyrical intro sets the scene for some soulful cinematography and atmospheric sequences that will drive the film into a pleasingly fluid spy-counterspy dance." - The Hollywood Reporter
