"Zhang Yimou's first spy thriller sends an ace team of Communist agents into the WW2 Japanese stronghold of Manchukuo. (...) The lyrical intro sets the scene for some soulful cinematography and atmospheric sequences that will drive the film into a pleasingly fluid spy-counterspy dance." - The Hollywood Reporter
