A mad genius or a genius madman? Director Mariano Llinás delves into the life of his beloved master, Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges, one of the greatest literary icons of the 20th century. But how do you capture a writer who could conjure entire worlds with a single sentence? Part detective film, part road movie, over five hours long and unmistakably Llinás.
When filmmaker Mariano Llinás is enticed by the owners of Jorge Luis Borges’ private archive to make a documentary about the literary giant, he approaches this monumental undertaking in true Pampero fashion: as a wild expedition through Borges’ universe. Together with Ernesto Montequin, the stoic custodian of the collection, he delves into the writer’s life and work. Drawing on diary fragments, unpublished poems, cryptic scribbles and notes, he attempts to get a grasp on his fellow countryman: that elusive writer who inspired the 20th century with his riddles, forking paths and endless labyrinths. As Llinás travels the world in search of traces and ghosts, a portrait emerges of the man, history and literature. Always playful and erudite, but with a healthy dose of self-deprecation, Llinás avoids the pitfalls of hagiography and happily loses himself in the shadowy paradoxes of a turbulent 20th century.
