Arthur Rimbaud was the rock star of French poetry: a brilliant bad boy who shook literature to its foundations as a teenager, only to turn his back on it completely at the age of twenty. In A. Rimbaud, Patrick Wang captures that restless spirit in a bold, almost three-hour cinematic trip. The film takes place almost entirely within a stark black box, where a single actor embodies Rimbaud and all the other characters are brought to life through musical instruments. The result is as theatrical as it is cinematic, as playful as it is austere. Wang, known for his grand two-part epic A Bread Factory (2018), about the resilience of art and community, once again embraces a form that defies convention. From the nights in Paris and Rimbaud’s tempestuous relationship with Paul Verlaine to his later life as a trader in Africa, A. Rimbaud is no conventional biopic, but an uncompromising attempt to make palpable the spirit of an elusive poet.
