Affliction

Edition 1998
113' - 1997 - Mystery, Drama, Thriller - Dialogue: English
Director: Paul Schrader Composer: Michael Brook With: Nick Nolte, Sissy Spacek, James Coburn
As sheriff of backwater town Lawford, New Hampshire, Wade Whitehouse has little to do but obey the town fathers and help folks cross the streets; when not doing those small tasks, he numbs himself with alcohol and marijuana. His nowhere, do-nothing job is, in many ways, a metaphor for his entire life, for Wade has never really grown up. His ex-wife Lillian is particularly critical of him, and even his own daughter Jill can scarcely stand to be around him. Wade's girlfriend Margie is the only one who seems to care. Wade's life changes forever the day his athletic pal Jack acts as a wilderness guide for a wealthy businessman out to shoot a deer. Jack returns from the woods alone, claiming the businessman accidentally shot himself.
