26 September | Alabaster DePlume x 'Time of the Heathen'
Videodroom kicks off this Saturday with Time of the Heathen (1961), a cinematic gem by theater director Peter Kass that was long thought lost. It is a poetic, surreal indictment of the violence of war, the nuclear arms race, and the devastating impact of racism. What begins as a rural noir featuring a classic "wrong man" protagonist gradually shifts into a chilling, proto-psychedelic trip. British saxophonist, poet, and activist Alabaster DePlume is composing a new live soundtrack for Time of the Heathen—engaging in a dialogue with the visuals and with the silence that is so characteristic of the film.
8 October | Mary Lattimore x 'Old Joy'
On the opening day of Film Fest Gent and the Film Music Days, we celebrate the 20th anniversary of Old Joy (2006), the intimate and melancholic road movie by American director Kelly Reichardt. She has granted us permission to screen this indie classic "for one night and one night only" with a brand-new live score. None other than celebrated harpist Mary Lattimore will perform a new score for the film, featuring her dreamy and meditative compositions.
9 October | múm x 'La vie rêvée'
Icelandic composer and cellist Hildur Guðnadóttir, this year’s World Soundtrack Awards Guest of Honour and a nominee for an award, will join Icelandic experimental pop pioneers múm on stage. Together, they will perform a brand-new live soundtrack for the quiet Canadian cult classic La vie rêvée (Dream Life), a tender portrait of female friendship and youthful ideals set in a sun-drenched Montréal.
17 October | Casino 'Battle' Royale
We’re going full "Bond" on 17 October. In keeping with annual tradition, we are wrapping up Videodroom with a unique soundtrack project—minus the film, but featuring plenty of live music. So, don’t expect a Bond movie on the big screen; instead, look forward to a once-in-a-lifetime musical tribute to the Bond universe by various Belgian artists, marking the 20th anniversary of Casino Royale. Afterwards, we’ll celebrate the closing party of Videodroom and Film Fest Gent in the VIERNULVIER café and ballroom, featuring a host of live performances and DJs, all with a Bond theme.
