Time of the heathen 5

As is tradition, Film Fest Gent and VIERNULVIER team up to bring you the unmissable VIDEODROOM screenings. Jazz musician Alabaster DePlume’s selection, Time of the Heathen (1961), makes this edition’s first release feel more relevant than ever.

The long-lost, but recently restored in 4K, cult film ‘Time of the Heathen’ (1961) confronts the viewer with the consequences of war, the nuclear arms race and the destructive impact of racism. Although the film opens with a man who is wrongly accused of murdering a housewife, this is far from a classic “wrong man” narrative. Director Peter Kass combines minimal dialogue with an explosion of psychedelic visuals. By doing so, he compels the audience to connect the dots in this intriguing and confronting gem.

The British composer, poet, jazz musician and activist Alabaster DePlume accompanies Time of the Heathen live with a newly composed soundtrack that accentuates both the film’s imagery and its characteristic silences. DePlume’s music is known for his warm and repetitive melodies. With his blend of spiritual jazz and spoken word, he already won over a Ghent audience in 2022 during the Theresia concerts. He has also collaborated with artists such as Bon Iver, Sampha and Kamasi Washington.

Between 10 September and 17 October 2026, twelve additional VIDEODROOM screenings will take place. The exact titles and dates will be announced in the coming weeks.

Tickets for Alabaster DePlume x Time of the Heathen are available on the VIERNULVIER website.
