Creative Partnerships
‘No film without film music' has been the unwritten motto of Film Fest Gent for decades. After all, it is often the creative collaborations between composers and filmmakers that lead to the most intriguing oeuvres. With Creative Partnership Film Fest Gent adds a brand-new format to the WSA Film Music Days and shines the spotlight on exceptional collaborations.
Awards
During the festival several awards are presented. Below you can find an overview of the various competitions and prizes.
Official Competition
Every year, the Official Competition offers a unique selection of the crème de la crème of international cinema. Enjoy an intriguing mix of new talent and established authors. An international jury screens the films and awards two prizes: the Grand Prix for Best Film and the Georges Delerue Award for Best Soundtrack / Sound Design. Below you find an overview of all juries and past winners.
World Soundtrack Awards
The renowned World Soundtrack Awards are the annual awards for film and television music, selected by composers and other film music professionals from the World Soundtrack Academy. Traditionally, the award ceremony is the closing event of Film Fest Ghent. Since the mid-1980s, the film festival has had a special focus on film music, organising concerts with composers such als Elmer Bernstein, Georges Delerue, Ennio Morricone, Hans Zimmer, and many others. In 2001, the festival created the World Soundtrack Academy and the World Soundtrack Awards to support the art of film music. Every year, the World Soundtrack Awards are presented during the ceremony and concert at the film festival.
Joseph Plateau Honorary Award
The Joseph Plateau Honorary Award is presented to distinguished guests of Film Fest Ghent whose achievements have earned them a special and distinct place in the history of international filmmaking.
International Short Film Competition
The Best International Short Film Award was first presented in 2019 and is selected by an international jury of industry professionals. Fiction, animation, documentary and anything that can be deemed an 'experiment' - all are eligible for the award which comes with a €5,000 cash prize, powered by Nationale Loterij.
Competition for Belgian Student Shorts
Since 2010 this prize has been awarded to selected students attending official film schools in Flanders, Brussels and Wallonia. The prize has a value of €5.000. A professional jury will judge the Belgian Student Short Competition, which usually consists of five to fifteen shorts. But the audience can choose their favorite film as well! Through this competition, Film Fest Gent emphasises the importance of the short film as an idiosyncratic medium and hopes to give young, talented filmmakers the prospect of a great career.MyAirBridge.com is the official transfer partner for the Belgian Student Short Competition.
Explore Zone
The Explore Zone jury, composed of young people between 18 and 26 years old, follows a selection of films by and for young people. At the end of the ride, the jury will present the Explore Award, the winning film receiving a free media campaign in De Morgen and Knack Focus, and at Studio Brussels. Thus, the winning film gains enhanced exposure upon release.
Audience Awards
Film Fest Ghent wants to know what you think. After each screening you can show your appreciation for the film with your festival ticket. This can be done online by voting with your unique ticket number, or by tearing a box on your physical ticket and depositing it in the ballot box at the screening location.
