A few months ahead of the festival, the Film Fest Ghent team is up and running to make sure the festival can continue in a safe manner. For the upcoming edition, Film Fest Ghent is striving for as much physical film exhibitions as possible, with various scenarios in mind.
Film Fest Ghent hopes to receive its guests live at the festival locations, however if the circumstances demand it, Film Fest Ghent will present itself also digitally to the audience.
Campaign Poster 2020
The poster of FFG2020 is revealed. The festival poster this year portrays German-Austrian actress Romy Schneider and the German actor August Diehl. The double portrait refers to the focus on German cinema in this year's film programme, which will be composed of recent feature and short films as well as older films that deserve to be (re)discovered.
The illustrious, German-Austrian actress Romy Schneider (1938-1982), started acting when she was fifteen and built an extremely successful career. She became world-famous in the role of Empress Elisabeth of Austria in the 'Sissi'-films. It took some effort to shed her sweet fairy-tale princess image, after which she performed one brilliant character role after another.
August Diehl is a German actor, known for inter alia 'Inglorious Bastards' (2009) by Quentin Tarantino and 'Salt' (2010) by Phillip Noyce. More recently, he convincingly interpreted the role of the Austrian farmer Franz Jägerstätter who refused to enlist for the German army during World War II, in Terrence Malick's enigmatic 'A Hidden Life' (2019). Before Diehl had his breaktrough outside of Germany, he was the leading actor in 'Die Fälscher' (2007), winner of the Academy Award for best foreign language film, later that year. Diehl won the Deutscher Filmpreis for best actor twice and became one of the most renowned actors in Germany.

The 47th edition of FFG will be characterised by the unique gaze on German cinema. Due to its many eras and movements, German cinema is compelling and intriguing, so believe the Film Fest Ghent-Programmers.
Wim De Witte, Program Director of Film Fest Ghent, postulates: "During the recent editions of Film Fest Ghent, German productions and co-productions have been well-represented (as such, in 2019 no less than 18 short and feature films were exhibited). Germany remains one of the strongholders of European cinema, even though the share of German films in the regular Belgian cinema circuit is rather minimal. Aside from a few prominent directors such as Fatih Akin, Wim Wenders and perhaps Christian Petzold, German cinema is often only discoverable at festivals. A good reason to put the richly varied, contemporary German cinema in a central position in our programme."

Preparations FFG2020 (13 > 24 Oct) continue seamlessly
More than four months ahead of the festival, Film Fest Ghent is releasing the campaign poster of its 47th edition: this year it is a double portrait of film icon Romy Schneider and German actor August Diehl, referring to the focus on German cinema in this year's festival programme. During the festival edition in October, safety first will be our motto and we will take into account all the measures against the corona virus that will be in force at that time.

Musical highlights
During the upcoming festival edition, a special birthday will also be celebrated: the internationally distinguished World Soundtrack Awards, sometimes even called the Oscars of film music, will celebrate its 20th year in 2020.
Moreover, VIDEODROOM, the collaboration project between Film Fest Ghent and Kunstencentrum Vooruit, will be presented again during the upcoming festival. The concept of VIDEODROOM, that will be presented for the third time in 2020, remains: top notch musicians perform live music - from reinterpretations of existing scores to unique improvisations to radical deconstructions of renowned film themes - accompanied by films, visuals and projections.
The full programme of Film Fest Ghent 2020 will be announced in September 2020.
