Imagine a world where kids do things because they want to and the media doesn’t have a say so. They play video games with violence, listen to hip-hop or hardcore, and watch films with sex, violence and the parents are to busy with work that most of the time kids have to rely on themselves. In Ben Coccio’s ‘Zero Day’, Andre and Cal “The Army Of Two”, declare war on their school in a video dairy which explains that video games, music and movies didn’t influence them. They view their school as the embodiment of all that’s wrong with their environment and are determined to issue what they describe as a “wake up call” to those around them. “Zero Days” deals with the psychology and culture of violence in a frank and serious way but doesn’t spoon feed a message. Coccio doesn’t issue excuses for the ills that have driven Andre and Calvin. The film doesn’t hand you any answers but it invites to draw an own conclusion. “Zero Day” contains an urgency that is impossible to escape and is sure to garner a strong reaction from even the most passive viewer.
