Yizo Yizo (township slang for the way it is) is a 13-part drama tackling the head-on problems endemic to the South African education system – a breakdown in the culture of learning and teaching, a sense of helplessness among parents, learners and teachers, drug abuse, gangsterism, rape … The series explores these issues in a racy, hard-hitting way that will rivet viewers. The place, the people, the language, the style of dress and even the pulsating kwaito music are typical of many township schools, giving authenticity to the drama. The series, which has been commissioned by the Department of Education, is bold and direct – even shocking in places.
