Based on a play by Federico Garcia Lorca, this beautiful human drama explores the spiritual and literal barrenness of a young Andalusian woman. Desperate to have a child, Yerma remains infertile. She views motherhood as the ideal form of love and her only chance at liberation. Her marriage has become passionless -which she thinks is causing her sterility- but her small-minded community prevents her from conceiving with another man she desires. In a last-ditch effort, Yerma joins a Catholic pilgrimage in honor of the saint of fertility. The unorthodox pagan pilgrimage becomes the place where Yerma will face up to a truth she can no longer avoid.
