New York's West Side. Two street gangs are mortal enemies: the Jets, white Americans led by Riff, and the Sharks, Portorican immigrants led by Bernardo. Ata ball, Tony, ex-leader of the Jets, meets Maria, Bernardo's sister. It's love at first sight. But tensions between the Jets and the Sharks get worse. West Side Story is one of the great musicals. It's based on Romeo and Julia and its musical numbers by Leonard Bernstein, and Stephen Sondheim have nearly all become standards.
