Away from his native land for over 25 years, Buñuel was invited by the Franco government to produce a film in spain as an effort to welcome him home. He was allowed to choose any subject he desired. The result was what many critics consider to be his greatest film. Ironically, it was never shown in Spain having been banned immediately after its opening at Cannes, where it won the Golden Palm. It is the story of a young novitiate, Viridiana. She is about to take her vows. Before she undertakes this giant step, the mother superior begs her to visit Don Jaime, Viridiana's wealthy uncle. To her surprise she finds Don Jaime to be a most gracious and polite host. However, beneath his calm demeanour he has been harbouring plans for the young woman...
