In the early 1980s, six graduates from Antwerp’s fashion academy transformed the city into an international fashion hub. Known as The Antwerp Six, they became a global phenomenon despite their very different styles. In The Six, filmmaker Reiner Holzemer explores their shared history and the origins of their legendary collective identity.
Between 1980 and 1982, six students graduated from the fashion department of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp who would go on to radically change the image of fashion and elevate Antwerp to the status of a fashion city. Walter Van Beirendonck, Ann Demeulemeester, Dries Van Noten, Dirk Van Saene, Marina Yee and Dirk Bikkembergs are six very different designers. But 40 years ago they were launched internationally as The Antwerp Six and quickly took on a near-mythical status in the international fashion world. German documentary maker Reiner Holzemer, who has made films about photographers such as Anton Corbijn and Juergen Teller, previously portrayed Van Noten in Dries. With The Six, he delves into the history of The Antwerp Six. Was that group identity genuine, or mainly a construct of the outside world? Holzemer explores this through their personal stories, with a wonderful soundtrack by Antwerp band Dez Mona.
