Vincente Minnelli

The Pirate

102' - 1948 - Comedy, Romance, Adventure, Music/Musical - Dialogue: English
Director: Vincente Minnelli Composer: Lennie Hayton, Conrad Salinger, Cole Porter, Blanche Sewell With: Judy Garland, Gene Kelly, Walter Slezak
On a Caribbean island constructed out of the talents and technology of MGM's top craftsmen, a young girl dreams of 'Mack the Black', a terrifying pirate; and a traveling showman cons her into believing that he is the pirate. From this basic illusion, and capitalizing on the musical's inherent lack of realism, Minnelli coordinates a series of plays on what is real and what is imaginary; on what's life and what's theatre. Abstract ideas visualized with dazzling wit - this is Hollywood? (National Film Theatre, 1986)
