This film follows the lives of a group of Cuban immigrants in the United States. After twenty years of captivity in a Cuban jail, Juan Raul Perez hopes to return to his wife Carmela and his now grown-up daughter Teresa in Miami. Now that freedom finally has become reality, he wants to rebuild his life and family. However, on the boat over, Juan meets Dottie Perez, a flamboyant ex-prostitute who dreams of rock and roll and John Wayne.
