Alan Rudolph

The Moderns

126' - 1988 - Drama, Comedy, Romance - Dialogue: French, English
Director: Alan Rudolph Composer: Mark Isham With: Keith Carradine, Linda Fiorentino, Wallace Shawn
The artistic world of Paris in the 1920s comes to life as if in a lustrous dream in The Moderns, Alan Rudolf's long-cherished project which he has succeeded in turning into his best film. A romantic's lush vision of a group of expatriate Americans at a time and place of some of the century's most tumultuous creative activity, pic is nevertheless entirely unsentimental in its blunt assessment of affairs of the heart, imagination and pocketbook. Rudolf who has frequently constructed his films around isolated, self-contained worlds populated by a limited number of characters, has here focused upon life in cafes, art galleries and painters' lofts.
